Some people find organising their workspace very frustrating. I remember sharing an office with a lady who was extremely untidy; her desk looked like a bomb struck it papers were spread out all over her desk, and even on the floor. My desk and workspace was always neat and organised and whenever I looked at her workspace I wanted to scream. But at the end of the day it was not up to me to try and change her. However, after a while I couldn't keep my thoughts to myself so I approached her about her mess and she laughed, saying that she didn't think her workspace was messy. But soon after she said she will try and keep her workspace tidy. Initially, she made a huge effort to keep her workspace tidy and I was pleased but she soon slipped back into her old ways. I then decided to give up and just accept that she was not an organised person and I couldn't change her.
As soon as you arrive at your desk, the first thing you should do is turn your computer on.
Then while the computer is booting up, you should put all the work you have to do together to one side.
Start organising your desk and immediate surrounding areas by tidying it up, making it look neat, including your draws, so that you have no clutter at all in your workspace. Try cleaning/polishing your desk also even if you have a daily officer cleaner. You will feel the need to keep it clean because you did it, not the cleaner. If you have to throw things away then do so. Surely there will be several things you need to get rid of.
Then get all your work you put to one side and start putting it into priority order.
Once you have finished, log-in on the computer, check your emails and begin working on the first thing on your priority list of things to do.
When you have finished file away any correspondence you don't need or put them into a follow-up folder so that it isn't on your desk.
Repeat the same process each time you work on something so that by the end of the day you don't have clutter in your workspace.
Keep in mind, a cluttered workspace is a cluttered mind' and an uncluttered workspace is an uncluttered mind'.
How do you stay organised?
After carrying out the above tips on organising your workspace, if you find that you are slipping back into your old habits then start over again by simply repeating these tips, on a daily basis, until you get used to keeping your workspace organised.
All the best!
